About the Formula 1 race Pekeliling, Malaysia
Circuit/Race info - Formula 1 - Pekeliling, Malaysia
Malaysia has long had ambitions to join the countries hosting international motor sport and the country now has a circuit worthy of hosting both the F1 and FIM Motorcycle Grands Prix. The Sepang Circuit has raised the standards for all other circuits since it the inaugural Formula 1 race in 1999. Some 64 km south of Kuala Lumpur the Sepang International Circuit has put Malaysia on the Formula 1 Map. The track can accommodate up to 130,000 spectators at a time.
The Sepang Circuit has been specifically designed to encourage overtaking, being very wide and containing at least four slow corners following long straights. The other 10 corners are medium- to high speed. Those characteristics lead to the brakes having a hard time, while cars also need plenty of traction to accelerate away. Ticket prices have been reduced after the first 2 years to attract more of the local folk to the race. Since 2001, the Malaysian Grand Prix has moved from the end of the schedule to the beginning. This has led to some surprising results as teams and drivers get to grips with their new equipment. Many races have been heavily influenced by the winners and losers of the scramble for position into the tight double hairpin bend at the first corner.
Region
Sepang is a district located in the southern part of the state of Selangor in Malaysia. It is perhaps best known for hosting the Formula 1 Sepang International Circuit and as the site of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which serves Kuala Lumpur.
The Sepang F1 International Circuit is the home of the Malaysian Grand Prix which is the Malaysian leg of the Formula One race.

General information
The Sepang International Circuit at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is a very modern Formula 1 circuit. The overall quality of the grandstands and facilities is good. Most of the seating areas are inside the centre building, the so-called "Mall Area". The Mall Area even features a Prayer Room. The Mall area offers two sides, the main straight part and the South side. Both sides feature two tiers where the upper tier offers a superior view over the lower tiers. There are also two additional Covered stands namely the K and F stands. At the other locations around the track there are standing areas. There is one covered standing area, C2. One can park close to the desired grandstand so the walking distance to your seat is never long.
Viewing quality
The Mall Area offers an excellent view of the start-finish straight and the pit lane. The South side offers a great view of the straight before the last turn and also of the whole south part of the circuit (turns 9 to 14). Stand K, where Platinum means the sections closest to the turn, is the most popular stand with the prime view of the first corner. Stand F offers a decent view but the cars pass at higher speeds. The standing areas offer a decent views with C2 and G offering a nice view of respectively corner 9 and corner 4.
Prices
Ticket prices for the Malaysian Grand Prix seem to be lower each year as opposed to the yearly increase we usually see. This is partly because the average Malayan does not earn enough to allow him to visit the event. The prices for the Mall Area are pretty average when compared to other events. The standing areas are very cheap. We see that a lot of back packers that are traveling through the region choose these. Make sure to choose the covered C2-area because it can be very hot in Malaysia!
Best Deal
The best deal on F1 tickets for the Malaysian Grand Prix is the K1 Gold stand. Located in Turn 1 it offers a great view of the technically challenging first curves. It also provides a great view of the characteristic Mall Area and the Main Grandstands. This quality paired with the price makes this stand the best deal for the Grand Prix of Malaysia. If you are on a tight budget you should go for the C2 area. Take a towel or plaid with you to sit on and go to the right part of the area (close to Turn 9) and you will have an excellent weekend for well under 100 Euro. |
